Molecular genetic pathology mgp is the subspecialty of pathology and medical genetics in which the principles theory and technologies of molecular biology and molecular genetics are applied to help to make clinical diagnoses determine disease prognosis monitor infections and therapies and provide risk assessments for genetic disorders. The molecular pathology division offers molecular diagnostic services to the clinical oncology practice at the cross cancer institute the hematology and hematopathology division at the uah and uah surgical pathology subspecialties and including lung gastrointestinal neuropathology dermatology soft tissue and lymphoma services. The molecular genetic pathology fellowship is an acgme accredited one year program designed to train individuals for academic careers including molecularly oriented clinical translational research development of molecular diagnostic technologies and disease oriented basic research. Molecular pathology is based on the principles techniques and tools of molecular biology as they are applied to diagnostic medicine in the clinical laboratory various molecular techniques are used to elucidate the genetic and molecular basis of many diseases and have led to discoveries that continue to shape the field of molecular diagnostics
